The PODS Relational Pipeline Data Model is available for implementation on either the Oracle or SQL Server relational database management system platforms. DDL scripts which automatically build the PODS Pipeline Data Model schema on these two common platforms are provided in each PODS release.

Implementing PODS as a relational model offers GIS neutrality. The relational database may be spatialized with any available GIS software platforms including ESRI, Smallworld, Intergraph, Bentley, and others.
PODS has been implemented as a relational database for many years by large pipeline companies. Relational database management systems have historically been the dominant data architecture for large-scale implementations.
Applications and users interface with the PODS relational database through Structured Query Language (SQL). The PODS Data Model is normalized to avoid undesirable dependencies, to allow for new columns and sub-models to be added without requiring restructuring, to be neutral to query statistics, and to organize data into logical groupings. Indexing and keys are utilized to optimize query performance.
