Announcing - New Work Group

Alternate Referencing

Gathering System

In the April PODS Board meeting, the Board approved the creation of a new Alternate Referencing Work Group.  This work group will be tasked with developing a recommended method for PODS to incorporate alternative referencing, or to accommodate both linear and geographic coordinate referencing methodology, in the PODS Pipeline Data Model.

PODS work groups are open to both PODS-member and non-member companies.  However, in order to Chair the work group, you must be employed by a PODS-member company.

Initial activities will be to define the work group's membership, leadership, and to develop a charter to be approved by the PODS Board of Directors.  The charter will define the objectives, scope, schedule, communications, reviews, and approvals required of the work group's deliverables.

If you are interested in participating in the Alternative Referencing Work Group, please send your contact information to the PODS Executive Director.

Announcing - New GUID Data Types Planned

Future PODS Relational Releases to support Native GUID Data Types

In the April PODS Board meeting, the Board approved a motion to support both native DBMS recommended GUID data types and the current CHAR(38) data types in future releases of the PODS Pipeline Data Model (RDBMS).  This means that starting with PODS 6.0, the PODS model will support both character data types for unique ID's and the recommended globally unique identifier native data type for the RDBMS.

For example the datatypes for the Event_GUID will be:

PODS 5.0/5.1 (Current)
Oracle:  CHAR(38)
SQL Server:  CHAR(38)

PODS 6.0+ (Future)
Oracle:  CHAR(38) or RAW(16)
SQL Server:  CHAR(38) or UNIQUEIDENTIFIER

The Oracle RAW(16) datatype is compatible with the SYS_GUID function. The SQL Server 2008 UNIQUEIDENTIFIER is compatible with the NEWID function. The UNIQUEIDENTIFIER stores a 16-byte binary number.

The GUID datatype for the ESRI PODS Geodatabase will remain esriFieldTypeGUID.
